Crew Training, Health Management, System Operations, Planning, Technical Support and Analysis for Kibo Operations
MSSD plays a key role in Kibo operations and provides flight controllers and training instructors. MSSD is staffed by the medical operation team that is responsible for flight crew health management, the team to create Kibo operation plans through international coordination, the maintenance and re-supply team, and the engineering analysis team, among other teams, to provide comprehensive supports to flight crew who operates in extreme environments.
MSSD always monitors Kibo operating status, controls, analyzes status data and coordinates with NASA and other international partners in real-time to prevent life-threatening incidents for flight crew from occurring.
Services
- Kibo Flight Control and Engineering Support
- Flight controllers communicate with flight crew and support intravehiclular and extravehicular activities on a 3 shift, 24-hour basis at the Tsukuba Space Center. Engineers, who have in-depth knowledge on the complicated systems and equipment of Kibo, respond to various contingencies.
- Flight Crew Training
- Flight crew training instructors provide various training to Japanese and foreign flight crew. The training is provided at the training facility in the Tsukuba Space Center and encompasses, but not limited to, familiarization and skill improvement of operating the Kibo systems, the JEM robot arm and the HTV.
- Planning and Engineering Evaluation of Flight Crew Activities on Kibo
- MSSD facilitates international coordination with NASA, Europe,Canada and Russia partners to establish operating plans of Kibo. In addition, MSSD plans for various logistic activities, transportation and storage of goods.
- Medical Operations and Flight Crew Support
- MSSD develops health management plans for flight crew including exercise programs and manages flight crew health through in-flight health check and optimization of the habitat environments. MSSD also provides engineering support for flight crew in training.
