"Manned space flights is best remembered as JAMSS"
We are in the business of connecting humanity with space using the ultimate safety and operation technologies required in space environment.

Since our establishment in 1990, Japan Manned Space Systems Corporation (JAMSS) has been involved in the operation and control of “Kibo” and “Kounotori” at the International Space Station (ISS), training of astronauts and controllers, realization of space experiments, and on-board support for astronauts. Our flight controllers monitor, control, and analyze the status of “Kibo” from the “Kibo” Mission Control Room at the JAXA Tsukuba Space Center and holds real-time coordination through hotlines with astronauts onboard and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in the USA.

Space experiment Supporting the success of space experiments at "Kibo"

Compared to ground experiments, opportunities for space experiment are extremely limited. To ensure success in space experiments using precious opportunities, JAMSS is responsible for careful preparation, including the training of the astronauts performing the experiments and the preparation of procedure sheets, through close collaboration with the researchers conducting the experiments and the relevant staff from the involved companies. We offer total support for space experiments, starting from these preparations, to the experiments conducted in space, to the retrieval of the results.

In “Kibo”, which has a microgravity environment, it is possible to conduct experiments that are difficult to perform on Earth, and therefore diverse experiments are being conducted. JAMSS optimizes these experiments for space environment so as to perform them safely and efficiently. We offer integrated support in detailed schedule adjustment with the researchers conducting the space experiments, checking experiment equipment and specimens, arranging the launch, training the astronauts performing the experiments, and preparing procedures. During the actual experiments, we coordinate closely with the astronauts to flexibly respond to unexpected situations. If any problem occurs, the technical support team will solve it. We support splendid space experiments from behind the scenes through our accumulated skills and knowledge.

The safety standards for equipment and materials used in space experiments are stricter than those applied to ground experiments.
Through our rich experience and knowledge, JAMSS offers support in equipment, specimens, and safety analysis of experiment management. Moreover, we determine the contents of the experiments conducted in space with researchers and “Kibo” users, verify experiment equipment and the compatibility of the experiments with the space environment based on the knowledge and analysis acquired on ground, and support the preparation of experiments by researchers and “Kibo” users.

Control and supply Protecting activities in space through control and material supplies

"We conduct 24-hour control of the Japanese Experiment Module “Kibo” from the Tsukuba Space Center.
We monitor and control the life-support systems, such as air conditioning/heating systems and communication systems, in coordination with controllers around the world, in order to support the activities of astronauts through monitoring, control, and analysis."

Technical support work for "Kibo"

At the International Space Station, resources such as electricity and air are shared among many countries.
Therefore, the system equipment and experiment devices that constitute “Kibo” must satisfy the standards common to every country. In addition to evaluation/analysis of compatibility, safety, and operability of the new system equipment and experiment devices installed at “Kibo”, JAMSS checks the health of “Kibo”, and if any problem occurs, we examine its solutions and offer technical support to the controllers from the backroom of the flight control room of “Kibo”.

Support Supporting successful astronaut missions

We support Japanese astronauts in the success of their missions when they are staying long-term at the International Space Station.
Moreover, JAMSS plays an important role in maintaining the health of astronauts who are exposed to the harsh conditions of space, including microgravity, closed/isolated environment and cosmic radiation.

  • Training of astronauts

    Training of astronauts

Our training instructors train astronauts at the testing facility of the JAXA Tsukuba Space Center in operation methods of the equipment and robotic arms installed on “Kibo” and “Kounotori”, as well as in how to use experiment devices.

  • On-board support for astronauts

    On-board support for astronauts

We create exercise programs and other health maintenance plans, check if the environment inside the space station is appropriate, and manage the health of astronauts at all times.
