【Asia’s first】JAMSS selected as a company to support space experiments on the ISS by JAMSTEC.
Collaborating with Aegis Aerospace, Inc. in the United States to provide exposure experiment support service using the experimental platform "MISSE".
Japan Manned Space Systems Corporation (JAMSS) was selected by Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) as a company to support space exposed experiment* conducted on the International Space Station (ISS).
In this project, we will support JAMSTEC's research experiments by utilizing services using the space experiment platform "MISSE" owned by Aegis Aerospace, Inc. in the United States.
Space experiment support in collaboration with Aegis Aerospace will be the first in Asia, and JAMSTEC's research experiment is based on the Research Promotion Program for Security Technology (Grant Number JPJ004596) of Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency in JAPAN.
* Space Exposed Experiment
An experiment in which the target materials are exposed to the outside of the ISS for a certain period, and the effects such as deterioration of the materials in outer space are investigated.
Based on the contract from JAMSTEC, "space exposure experiment on dissimilar metal bonding of resin and Aluminum and Magnesium", JAMSS will support research on exposure experiment using the space environment in one-stop for three years from 2023 to 2025. The main support contents are as follows.
1. Drafting an experimental plan
2. Conducting control experiments on the ground
3. Supporting the launch from the United States
4. Conducting space exposure experiment on the ISS
5. Collecting experimental data
6. Delivery of ground experiment and space exposure experiment data
In this experiment, we aim to evaluate the reliability of the bonding by exposing the sample of the hard-to-bond composite material and the light metal directly bonded by laser to the space for a certain period.
In the future, it is expected to develop into joining technology in the research and development of space elevator climbers.
In addition, in the exposure experiment on the ISS, we plan to conduct two exposure experiments for about each six months using the experimental platform "MISSE" owned by the US company Aegis Aerospace, Inc.
The first experiment is scheduled to be launched from the United States to the ISS around the spring of 2024, and then transferred to the exposed environment.

JAMSS will continue to provide opportunities for experiments using the space environment to research institutes and private companies in Japan and overseas, and as a system integrator that connects space and customers, we will accelerate our business activities for the post-ISS era.

We are very honored to be able to take a step forward in expanding the possibilities of space utilization in Japan and Europe/Asia through collaboration with Aegis Aerospace, a US Commercial Service Provider. JAMSTEC's research will contribute to future space development, and we are very happy to be able to help as a space company. We will continue to expand and continue this kind of collaboration and try to make the use of space more accessible.
【Mark Shumbera, Vice President, Aegis Aerospace, Inc.】
We are excited and honored to collaborate with JAMSS to help advance orbital space research in Japan and Asia using our MISSE platform. We look forward to flying experiments from JAMSTEC and other organizations as we continue to launch and return MISSE mission about every six months.
